Server Monitoring
This service provides a low cost server management service to customers who do not wish to pay for the Comprehensive Management service. The service consists of essential daily operational activities which are sufficient to ensure that the server is secure and running normally. The customer is immediately notified of any problems that these daily security checks might raise and an estimate is provided of the work involved to resolve the problems.

The customer is also notified of any software upgrades that should be applied. No other action is taken unless instruction is given by the customer.

There are two fees associated with this service: an annual fee to cover the costs of the essential daily operational activities, and an hourly fee for any other work. Systems administration activities on the server, such as data recovery, software installation or upgrade, will only be carried out on the instruction of the customer and will be charged at the hourly rate.  An estimate of the cost will be provided for all work that the Steady Networking proposes to its customers.

The essential daily security activities consist of the following:

• Maintaining daily incremental backups to the Hierarchical File Server at Steady Networking.

• Performing daily checks on server logs. This includes general server 'health' checks, backup logs and anti-virus scanner logs.

• Performing monthly tape backups for use in disaster recovery.

• Maintaining an archive of tape backups to speed up restoration after a disk failure or recovery of old files.

• Maintaining an up to date anti-virus protection facility.

• Liaison with IT support staff.

An emergency response and disaster recovery service of the same standard as provided in the Comprehensive Management service is included, but if this is invoked, it will be charged for at an hourly rate.


Comprehensive Management
This service provides a complete server management service, for which there is a single fixed annual fee and no further charges. Full details are available in the Steady Networking File Server Service Level Agreement. The service consists of the features provided by the Server Monitoring service plus the following considerable enhancements:
 

• Providing an emergency response and disaster recovery service. This includes the provision of temporary replacement servers where appropriate and being able to allocate a number of staff to a critical problem in order to resolve it quickly. Response time is guaranteed to within 8 working hours and will typically be considerably less than this.

• Recommending configurations which provide an optimum balance between capital cost and resilience to failure.

• Maintaining the server operating system to the latest patch level.

• Keeping abreast of latest server OS technologies.

• Installing applications in a stable and manageable form.

• Installing application updates.

• Acting as a conduit for information about the wider network.

• Advising on and implementing secure client PC configurations.

• Advising on and implementing secure server configurations.

• Providing IT consultancy.

• Providing a hardware and software ordering service.

Prior to committing to providing this service, the Steady Networking will need to make an assessment of the current configuration and methods of use of any existing server setup. Steady Networking requires certain minimum standards to be met so that the efficiency of the management of the system can be maximised. Following and assessment of a system, Steady Networking will make recommendations about what it believes should be done (if anything) and will provide an estimate of the cost involved (if any).


Server Check-up
This is a service whereby the Steady Networking will perform a 'health check' on a file server (Netware, NT or Unix) to determine whether the operating system is in need of updating or patching to correct errors or security risks and any other check-up that the customer requests. A report of the findings will be produced which will include an estimate of the cost of righting any wrongs. Charges for this service are variable, depending on the exact detail of what is required.
